This material is used to study Complex Sentences in a Montessori Elementary environment. It helps children appreciate the underlying structures of the language and enriches their self-expression.
Children break down complex sentences into principal, dependent and independent clauses. A red rectangle represents the principal or main clause and arrows help the children identify the different clauses in the sentence. Black arrows stand for noun clauses (for subject, direct and indirect objects), blue arrows stand for adjective clauses and orange arrows represent the adverbial clauses.
Box A
Arrows in Box A have a question on one side and the name of the clause on the other.
Box B
In Box B, the arrows have only the names of the clauses and no questions.
